Quick Details

Hour Glass Duration:  1 hour

Calendar Availability: May 27th

Details

Build the skills and judgment needed to navigate safely in the dynamic waters of Elliott Bay and Puget Sound. While a shoreline paddle can feel straightforward, conditions can change quickly—wind builds, fog rolls in, and busy boat traffic demands awareness and decision-making.

This class focuses on practical, real-world navigation skills for sea kayakers, combining shoreline instruction with on-water practice in active conditions.

You’ll learn:

– Boat traffic awareness and safe crossing techniques
– Wind, waves, and marine weather interpretation
– Tides, currents, and ferry-angle basics
– Chart and compass navigation, including low-visibility scenarios
– VHF radio use, group communication, and on-water decision-making

Throughout the session, we emphasize route planning, situational awareness, and making confident decisions in a busy urban marine environment.

The class builds toward a capstone crossing from Seacrest Park Cove to Blake Island, where you’ll apply your skills in a real-world setting.

Because weather, currents, and marine traffic all shape the experience, preparation is key—please call ahead for guidance on appropriate gear and clothing to stay comfortable on the water.
